Fangirling Pshiiit + A Nail Art Basics Giveaway!

Lisa writes . . .

A few months back, I caught sight of this amazing mosaic mani by the very talented Pshiiit, and thus began an obsession to get that design onto my fingertips.  Confession:  Like many in her legion of followers, I’m a Pshiiit fangirl!

Though I studied her flash tutorial like it was an entrance exam, in the end, I just couldn’t get my act together, and flunked badly. True story:  There were more pieces of striping tape on my desk, shirt, pants, and walls, than made it onto my fingernails.

With that experience, I gave up any hope of replicating Pshiiit’s marvelous mani.  You know, some things, are just best left to the French.   C’est la vie, and all that business.

Then, last weekend, while mindlessly doodling with various tools and techniques, I found myself (ho-hum) snipping lengths of striping tape, and deftly positioning them (where the hell did that come from?) in random patterns on my white-tipped nails.  Random patterns that didn’t look half bad.

Then, a “light bulb moment”…

Pshiit’s tutorial had finally sunk in!  Not a perfect match, but good enough for government work, as they say.

Since I had the momentum going, I grabbed a tiny nail art brush, and painted most of the resulting spaces with a quad of Essie Resort 2013 colors I’d picked up earlier for this very purpose: Come Here, a coral-red creme; Under Wear, an orchid creme; In the Cab-ana, an aqua creme; and First Timer, a pastel minty green creme.

FYI, These full-size shades are soooo cute that  I also snagged a box of Essie minis for a giveaway (see below)!

But wait.  Gotta have bling!

As in Pshiit’s original, I added sparkle by filling in a block, here and there, with glitz.  My chosen glitz?  OPI Honey Ryder, a versatile gold Liquid Sand finish. More on that addiction in an upcoming post.

The entire mani was then smoothed over with two layers of quick-dry top coat (butterLONDON Hardwear) for shine and durability.

Gotta love it: Besides polish, all that’s needed to pull this one off, is a little patience, a good nail art brush and some striping tape!

Speaking of which, and since you made it this far (Geez, you seriously ROCK!)…

From Friday, July 5, 2013 at 12:00 AM EST, until Friday, July 12, 2013 at 12:00 AM EST, be sure to enter our giveaway to win some sweet nail art goodies.  This giveaway is open internationally!

This mani is gorgeous, Lisa! I’d say your mani far suppresses any work that the government can do! 😉 I’d have to say my go to nail art is a gradient, because it’s super easy! lol 🙂

  4. July 5, 2013 at 9:09 am

I love how you mastered the technique! The result is just awesome! You know I am somewhat a fan of gradients, because I can finally make them pretty (thanks to you pushing me to try again!). If I was able to watermarble decently that would be my fave though!

I have so many favorites that it’s really hard to choose but right now what comes to mind is that I’ve been seeing some really awesome fan brush mani’s. Ty for the opportunity!

Wow, your mani is as good as the original. I really love this association of colors. When I first saw this collection of Essie I thought it was too “flashy” for me but in those pictures it look so nice and soft, maybe it’s the white underneath it, but I love them that way. Since i’m a beginner in nail art (I could say beginner in nail painting too), I don’t have a favorite form of nail art. I’m just amazed by all the possibilities of it. All it takes is a little inspiration. 😉 Great work!!

I love to put an unexpected element on my nails. One time I might put a little gold flecking over my base color. One time I may use a contrasting color combination. A reverse French Tip using color instead of traditional pink and white.I haven’t tried graphics or flowers, etc. because I don’t have the tools for that.

Water marbles are the bane of my nail polish existence, Marsha. I’ve such admiration for folks like yourself who’ve mastered the technique. Remind me to one day tell you the story of my water marbled “spinach nails.” ‘Twas not a pretty sight. 😉
