No So Miserables After All

Liz says…

Oh, hello.

Let me start off by asking… do you like pretty things? What about… epic musicals and tragic characters? Linear holos? Brown polishes? I mean… c’mon, something here has to resonate. Not convinced? Alright, it’s time for the big guns. Let’s talk pictures and polish, my friends.

What you see here is the ever so stunning (yet deliciously neutral) On My Own from Chaos and Crocodiles. One of five exclusive polishes included in the Paint The Rainbow – March 2016 set, this baby went on sale March 25, 2016 (it’s still available as of the time of posting… you know what that means, my little chickadees – check that business out). If you like brown holos, this polish is for you! With aqua shimmer and blue, copper, and gold microflakes, On My Own is the kind of neutral head turner I can get behind. Because… let’s get something straight right now. Brown is beautiful.

Application was a breeze with On My Own. Two medium-thick coats got me to full opacity without getting thick. With linear holos in general, I’ve noticed a tendency towards gummy, difficult to maneuver application before I’ve managed to finish one hand, let alone an entire manicure. I can say with full confidence that On My Own applied smoothly from beginning to end. It’s quality stuff, m’dears. Also, it’s brown. Can I get a hallelujah? Now, I’d be remiss if I let you go without talking about the inspiration for this polish. I mean, c’mon. Don’t you want to talk about musicals?! I’m going to assume that the answer is yes.

March’s Paint The Rainbow set is entirely inspired by musical theater… which, in itself is pretty damn awesome! There are few mediums, in my humble opinion, that work with the opulence and rainbow variety that is nail polish. Think about it, musical theater is all about emotion and telling a story, and at the end of the day your nails can do the same thing. Slap a sexy red on your nails and you’re sharing a mood. A good blue can speak volumes about your personality. Nail art can tell a story without a single word having been spoken. Really, it’s a match made in heaven. Especially when it comes to On My Own.

I don’t know if you’re familiar with the story of Les Miserables, but it’s kind of a big deal. It’s a sweeping, sprawling, epic story of pain and love and sacrifice and revolution. Of the many characters that are introduced, one of the most memorable is that of Éponine. She’s incredibly tragic, but on the positive side she has one of the most memorable songs of the entire story. Yup. She sings On My Own, and it’s a song that never fails to send shivers down my spine.

I mean, take a look at that macro, would you? It translates so delicately the very lyrics of the song. I look at my nails when I’m wearing On My Own, and I can see rain-drenched pavement shining at night. I can see the starlight that Éponine sings about… I also tend to get the soundtrack of Les Miserables stuck in my head, but that’s another story entirely…

So, what do you think? Have you been swept away by the romance of musical theater and nail polish? Have I gotten On My Own stuck in your head yet? Are you as in love with brown holos as I am? I know that for me, the answer to all of the above is a resounding yes! 😀
